Heartburn – Pregnancy Heartrburn Relief

Tim J. asked:

For all new mothers, pregnancy is one of the most incredible time of their life. However, there one thing that can create discomfort and pain for them. This condition is called pregnancy heartburn which can be cured effectively if you learn more about pregnancy heartburn relief.

Then, why do some pregnancy women have heartburn and some don’t ?

Heartburn can happen easily while the digested food reflux back into your esophagus and throat. Normally, There is an organ like a valve that holds the stomach acids in the stomach where the intestinal lining prevents your body from the effects of the acid. This valve is the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). When the LES loosen up, the stomach acids reflux back into the esophagus. This causes the lining of the esophagus, which is very thin and cannot cope with the acid, to get irritated and inflamed.

When a woman is pregnant, heartburn does not happen only from the digested food juices refluxing back into the esophagus and throat. The increased amounts of hormones in the body can also soften the muscles that normally make the LES closed. Therefore, if the LES relaxes at an unsuitable moment, then food and acid can easily reflux back into their esophagus.

Another reason that may also contribute to pregnancy heartburn is the baby. During pregnancy a woman’s body changes a lot to accommodate the growing baby. While the baby continues to grow within the womb, there is pressure in the stomach. This pressure can force the stomach acid to reflux through the LES through the esophagus which causes pregnancy heartburn.

Currently, there is some discusstion over pregancy heartburn relief. The most widely approach to take is to lessen the discomfort that you may have because of pregnancy heartburn. With a few easy precautions you can hold this pain. Some certain foods that are known to trigger heartburn should be avoided to reduce the chances of heartburn.

Avoid some drinks which are coffee, tea, colas and alcohol because these can relax the LES and let acid to reflux back into the esophagus. Besides, large meals is not advised. You should try to eat several small meals throughout the day.

At night when you sleep, you should also keep your head higher than your body. This will put your stomach where they belong and prevent the cause of pregnancy heartburn.

Alport Syndrome – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

peterhutch asked:

Alport Syndrome (AS) is an inherited disorder of the basement membranes of the kidney, eye and ear. People who inherit defective genes for the “collagen” proteins in these basement membranes may develop progressive loss of renal function, deafness and abnormalities of the eye. In the kidneys, glomerular basement membranes normally act like filters, allowing fluid to move from blood vessels to urine while retaining protein and red blood cells within the bloodstream. Thus, one of the early signs of Alport syndrome may be leakage of small amounts of blood or protein into the urine during childhood.Collagen-containing membranes are also important for the shape of the lens of the eye and the structure of the inner ear.

Causes

Alport syndrome is an inherited form of kidney inflammation (nephritis). It’s caused by a mutation in a gene for a protein in connective tissue, called collagen. The disorder is uncommon, and most often affects males. Women can transmit the gene for the disorder to their children, even if they have no symptoms.

When mutations prevent the formation of type IV collagen fibers, the basement membranes of the kidneys are not able to filter waste products from the blood and create urine normally, allowing blood and protein into the urine. The abnormalities of type IV collagen in kidney basement membranes cause gradual scarring of the kidneys, eventually leading to kidney failure in many people with the disease.

Approximately 50-80% of patients with X-linked Alport syndrome have mutations in the COL4A5 gene. Several hundred mutations, including missense mutations, splice-site mutations, and small deletions account for most cases of X-linked Alport syndrome. Few mutations have been found in more than 1 family.

Alport syndrome is a form of hereditary nephritis. There may be nerve deafness and congenital eye abnormalities associated with Alport syndrome. The cause is a mutation in a gene for collagen. The disorder is uncommon, and most often affects males since the genetic defect is typically found on the X chromosome.

Genes that Cause Renal Failure: Dialysis patients and their relatives with diabetes, high blood pressure and/or kidney failure are sought for a study at Case Western Reserve University to identify genes that contribute to or cause renal failure. Family participants will each receive $25 for their blood sample and complete medical and family histories.

Other common mutations lead to premature termination of protein translation and loss of the carboxy-terminal NC1 domain, resulting in defective interchain association and formation of the collagen network.

Symptoms

Hearing loss can be present at birth (congenital) or become evident later in life (acquired deafness). The distinction between acquired and congenital deafness specifies only the time that the deafness appears. It does not specify whether the cause of the deafness is genetic (inherited).

Treatment

There is no cure for Alport’s syndrome, but treatment is available to ensure the kidneys can function as fully as possible. This includes limiting your intake of salts and fluids, high amounts of which put too much strain on the kidneys. Your doctor will also recommend that you take steps to control your blood pressure and potassium levels. If you have nephrotic syndrome, your doctor will recommend lowering your fluid intake; taking medications called diuretics, which help the kidneys eliminate wastes from the body by increasing urinatation; and eliminating all salts from your diet. You may also need to receive a transfusion of albumin.

Foods for Constipation Prevention and Relief

Dr John Anne asked:

The most effective treatment of constipation is preventing the onset of the symptoms by choosing to eat a healthy diet. The leading cause of constipation is a poor diet – poor choice of foods, irregular eating habits, and not chewing your food enough so that you aid in the digestive process. A healthy diet should consist of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetable, foods that are high in fiber content, and foods that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Your diet should include foods for constipation prevention and relief. Foods Rich in Fiber The following foods provide a great source of natural fiber and are foods for constipation prevention and relief: Wheat bran cerealPinto beansBananasPrunes ApplesRaisinsSaladsWhole-grain breadsRaw vegetablesPearsBlueberriesStrawberriesPeachesOrangesApricotsOatmealWhole-wheat spaghettiAlmondsPistachio nutsPeanutsCashewsPeasBrussels SproutsTurnip greensCornPotatoCarrots Omega-3 Fatty Acids Your body needs a certain amount of “good” fats. Food that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids is the healthiest way to get the required amount of fats. Foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are also good for the prevention of constipation. Here are some good sources for obtaining Omega-3 fatty acids naturally and providing foods for constipation prevention and relief: MackerelHerring SardinesLake TroutAlbacore TunaSalmonTofuSoybeansCanolaWalnutsFlaxseeds Foods That Help Relieve Constipation There are many foods for constipation prevention and the relief of the symptoms of constipation: Bale fruit – cleans and tones intestinesBran products – provides fiber to soften stoolsGuava – provides needed roughageCorn syrup – helps to soften stoolsSugar – helps to soften stools Spices – such as cumin, coriander, turmeric powder, fennel, and asafetida makes food easier to digestApple Pectin – provide natural fiberFolic Acid – insufficient intake of folic acid can cause constipationHoney – natural form of sugarLemon juice – drink with warm water 2-3 times daily How You Eat Just as important as what you eat is how you eat. One of the most common causes of constipation is a poor diet – which can consist of poor food choices and irregular eating patterns. You should eat a healthy diet that consists of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, food high in fiber, and foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Cold-water fish should be a regular part of your diet – at least 2 times per week or more. Red meat should be eliminated from your diet – or eaten in small quantities. How you eat your food is an important element in preventing or relieving constipation. You should adhere to a regular eating schedule. You should try to eat your meals at the same time each day – or as close as possible. Keeping your body on a regular schedule helps your digestive system to work naturally and on schedule. Another area that is controllable by you is chewing your food. If you swallow your food before it is chewed up sufficiently, it makes it harder for your body to digest the food. Be sure to chew your food slowly and chew it into small pieces so that your digestive system does not have to work harder than is necessary. Be sure you have plenty of time to eat your meal and do not have to rush, which can cause you to swallow your food before you have sufficiently chewed it. It is just as important to take proper care of your digestive system as it is to take care of other parts of your body. If you work with your digestive system and do things that will ease the burden on your digestive system, your digestive system will work with you. The best way to do this is to eat a healthy diet, eat regularly, and to exercise regularly.

Diarrhea Remedy

jannet asked:

Diarrhea is a very common ailment and there are several herbal remedies that can help you get through it and recover. There are many over-the-counter medicines for diarrhea, but they often stop the course too quickly and leave you constipated and the intestines irritated. Herbs can help soothe the intestines and nourish the whole digestive tract. In Ayurveda, diarrhea is known as Atisara. Vitiation in any of the three doshas can cause atisara. However, the vitiation of vata dosha is particularly responsible as it brings more water to the intestine and lowers the digestive fire which causes diarrhea.

Some medications may cause diarrhea. The most common drugs that cause diarrhea are antacids. Antacids that contain magnesium cause diarrhea in many people. If you suspect that this may be the problem avoid using antacids containing magnesium for one to two weeks. Diarrhea may cause a loss of significant amounts of water and salts. In most cases, this irritating condition generally clears out on their own without treatment. However, if the ailment persists, you will become dehydrated, or you could pass blood in your stool, and when this happens you need to quickly consult with your doctor. Potassium is depleted with bouts of diarrhea, so it is important to eat potassium rich foods, like bananas, or to take supplementation.

Passage of urine is infrequent and is accompanied by a burning sensation.  The pulse becomes slow, breathing is rapid, and generally the patient looks pale and emaciated.  Do not let this condition continue. Give the following treatment in either mild or severe cases and good results will be obtained. While activated charcoal is a good emergency remedy, probiotic supplements are longer term. While they can have an immediate effect, they are best when taken as part of your normal diet. The ‘friendly bacteria’ contained in probiotics have been proved clinically not only to help boost your immune system and help it fight bacterial and viral intestinal infections, but also to prevent such pathogens from getting a foothold in the first place.

Brown rice and toasted whole grain bread are traditional home remedies for diarrhea that my grandmother used and with good reason. These foods provide you with some energy and nutrients to overcome feelings of weakness, while giving bulk for the stool. Ginger can also help in relieving the symptoms of diarrhea, especially stomach cramps and pain. Ginger may come in the form of tea or capsules. Equal parts of ginger powder, cumin powder, and cinnamon powder, can ease the accompanying symptoms of diarrhea. In case of diarrhea you should drink plenty of fluids and at the same time you should not drink alcohol and caffeine. Drinks made from ginger and carrots are useful as they make the stools less watery. Also make sure that you do not drink juice made of apple because it will only increase diarrhea.

Among these are bananas that replace the lost potassium, oily fish or fish oil capsules that provide the essential fatty acids that not only help to dispel diarrhea but also maintain your health, astringent foods such as pomegranate, carob and tannins in black teas and the nutrients available from juiced greens and fruits. All of these help to maintain the balance of vitamins and minerals needed for good health, plus they help settle and heal your intestine so you are not dealing with cumbersome, painful symptoms such as diarrhea.

How to Deal With Bile Reflux

Joe Barton asked:

It’s bad enough to have acid reflux–the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus that causes heartburn and discomfort for millions. Add on bile reflux, where digestive fluid from the liver flows into the stomach and esophagus, and you’ve got a recipe for major discomfort that can be difficult to treat.

Many people who have acid reflux also have bile reflux, and it can be difficult to distinguish them, since both have heartburn as a major symptom.

People with bile reflux often also have a burning pain in the upper abdomen, nausea or vomiting of bile. Sometimes they will also have a cough or sound hoarse. It can be caused by a peptic ulcer, having had your galbladder removed, or having damage to the valve that keeps bile from getting into the stomach. This damage often occurs during gastric surgery such as gastric bypass.

Drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (Prevacid and Nexium are two popular ones) are normally prescribed for bile reflux, even though the drugs are technically designed to reduce acid. Ursodeoxycholic acid is a very common treatment, as it reduces the amount of bile that is produced, which limits opportunities for reflux.

There are also surgical options when it comes to treating bile reflux. Bile can be diverted away from the stomach by making a new connection lower down in the intestine. Part of the stomach may be sewn around the lower esophageal sphincter. This surgery is most often used to treat acid reflux, as it increases pressure at the lower end of the esophagus, making it difficult for acid to rise. It may be helpful for bile reflux, but some people still have symptoms after surgery.

Bile reflux does not seem to be as positively affected by lifestyle changes as acid reflux does, but since many people have both, the same recommendations apply. Some people get relief from eating smaller meals or avoiding acidic and spicy foods, but just as with treating acid reflux, these remedies don’t work for everyone. My father actually had both after a bile duct was attached to his stomach instead of his intestine during a surgery.

Quite by accident after trying just about everything you always hear recommended for acid reflux, GERD and bile reflux, he found a really simple treatment at his local grocery store that has kept him pain-free for decades. So it certainly is possible to get rid of your bile reflux without resorting to surgery and a life of drugs.

Corneal Ulcer Information and Treatment

Juliet Cohen asked:

Corneal ulcers are a often problem in veterinary medicine. A corneal ulcer is a spilt in the outer layer or epithelium of the cornea. Corneal ulcers are most usually due to infection, which may include bacteria, viruses, fungi, or amoebas. It is a familier condition in humans particularly in the tropics and the agrarian societies. In developing countries, corneal ulcer is frequently the cause of great morbidity as well as economic loss to the person and family. There are many causes of corneal ulcers such as injuries, abnormal eyelashes that irritate the surface, lack of tear production and infections.

Extra causes of ulcers involve herpes simplex viral infections, inflammatory diseases, corneal abrasions or injuries, and additional systemic diseases. Corneal ulcers are characterized according to location, depth, related diseases, and cause. Improper use of contact lenses has become a common cause of corneal injury. Eyelid or tear function failure is the other way to make the eye vulnerable to infection. The early signs of a corneal ulcer include discomfort and irritation of the eyes. This can quickly lead to watering of the eyes, a discharge forming, pain and sensitivity to light. Treatment of corneal ulcer depends on causes or symptoms.

Some times anti-inflammatory medicines will be offered and steroidal preparations to help decrease the irritation and inflammation of the cornea. Medications may then be changed to more specifically target the cause of the infection. A combination of medications may be necessary. Corneal transplantation may be necessary to restore vision. If the corneal ulcer is large, hospitalization may be necessary. Steroid medications are avoided in cases of infectious ulcers. In infection by fungi, treatment is topical instillation of natamycin for Fusarium, Cephalosporium, and Candida.

In infection by varicella-zoster virus, topical sulfonamide ointment is applied three or 4 times everyday to cure infection. In infection by fungi, treatment is topical implantion of natamycin for Fusarium, Cephalosporium, and Candida. In many other cases, antibacterial eye drops are utilized every 15 minutes. Self-Care treatment is also important corneal ulcer. If you wear contact lenses, remove them immediately. Do not handle or rub your eye with your fingers and restrict spread of infection by washing your hands often and drying them with a clean towel. Apply cool compresses to the affected eye.
